An Update on the Public Policy Concept under Philippine Jurisprudence – July 2023 Joint PIArb-CIArb

On July 27, 2023, the Philippine Institute of Arbitrators (PIArb) and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators East Asia Branch (CIArb) held their second joint fellowship in person at Quisumbing Torres. PIArb President Julius Anthony R. Omila gave the opening remarks. President Emeritus Donemark J. L. Calimon, was the main speaker. He led an interactive discussion of the latest decisions of the Supreme Court dealing with the concept of public policy in arbitration. Among the cases he discussed were Maynilad Water Services Inc. v. National Water and Resource Board, Lone Congressional district of Benguet Province v. Lepanto Consolidated Mining Company, and Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation v. TIG Insurance (citations omitted) Senior PIArb officers also shared their valuable inputs on the topic. The event was emceed by Atty. Jefferson Constantino, PIArb Vice President for Fellowships and Member Relations. The fellowship ended with cocktails sponsored by Quisumbing Torres for the participants.
